The Museum School of Avondale Estates (DeKalb County)

The Museum School

The Museum School of Avondale Estates was begun by the Avondale Education Association with the goal of creating an innovative public school built on academic achievement and strong community involvement.

Opened in 2010, The Museum School is chartered by the DeKalb County School System and is now in its third academic year. For the 2012-2013 year, it provides an excellent education to 264 children in central DeKalb County in grades K-5 and will add a grade level each year through the eighth grade.

The museum concept is a proven school model that provides project-based learning through partnerships with museums and other community organizations. Students learn collaboratively by engaging in real-world projects and mentorships with experts. Partnership with history centers, science museums and other learning institutions brings tangibility to classroom lessons. The school partners with some of the region’s most prestigious institutions, including the Atlanta History Center, Fernbank Museum of Natural History, the Georgia Aquarium, Georgia Tech and the High Museum of Art.

Museum learning leads to a deeper level of understanding and higher student achievement:

  • Museum School third graders have ranked #1 in Science out of more than 1,200 public elementary schools in Georgia for two years in a row, and its fourth graders rank #2 in the state in Science, based on mean scale scores on the statewide CRCT.
  • In 2012, 100% of Museum School fourth-grade students met or exceeded state standards in every subject category of the CRCT. Among third graders, 100% met or exceeded state standards in Reading, English/Language Arts and Social Studies, and 95% met or exceeded standards in Science and Math.
  • Explorers show impressive results on a national level, too. The Measures of Academic Progress assessment indicates Museum School students, from kindergarten through fourth grade, are learning at a faster rater than their peers across the country.
  • On the 2012 Georgia Writing Assessments, at least 90% of Museum School third graders met or exceeded state performance standards in all areas and types of writing.
