First public school for girls inducts first class August 8, 2008 - The AtlantaJournal-Constitution Georgia's first state-chartered public school for girls formally inducted the Class of 2015 in a Friday night ceremony that challenged the sixth-graders to move forward as sisters and scholars. The girls of Ivy Preparatory Academy, clad in dress green blazers and plaid skirts, filed into an auditorium at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Norcross, their temporary home, to the sound of applause. They were called forward to light lamps of knowledge to symbolize their journey ahead. The school's 160 students were grouped by home rooms named after prestigious institutions - Harvard, Princeton, Brown, Stanford, Oxford and Spelman - to encourage them to aim high.
