Utopian Academy for the Arts – Counselor (Clayton)


Utopian Academy for the Arts is an independent public charter school serving middle school children and families throughout Clayton County, GA. Utopian Academy will enroll 300 students in the 2014-15 school year. Utopian Academy was approved by the State Charter Schools Commission of Georgia and will operate as a Local Education Agency (LEA). The rationale for the enrollment plan for Utopian Academy for the Arts is to provide a significant educational benefit of having a gender-based classroom environment, longer school day, longer school year, Saturday school, and classes in the dramatic, media, and culinary arts for students in Clayton County, GA.


  • Conduct individual counseling with students in areas of need;

  • Conduct group counseling with students in areas of social, emotional, and academic growth and development;

  • Coordinate with school staff to provide supportive instructional classroom activities that relate to social, emotional, and academic growth and development;

  • Coordinate student class schedules;

  • Assist with administration of standardized testing;

  • Participate in professional development activities;

  • Intervene during crisis situations;

  • Is available to students, parents, and staff for conferences;

  • Facilitate home-school-community communication and involvement;

  • Conduct guidance and counseling activities at the scheduled time;

  • Maintain accurate, complete, and appropriate records and files promptly;

  • Is knowledgeable of physical and mental health needs of students;

  • Provide topical information for students related to physical and emotional health, growth, and development, social skills, and life skills

  • Know and use, when applicable, principals of behavior management;

  • Create and maintains a positive psychological atmosphere and physical environment conducive to counseling;

  • Communicate objectives and content of counseling program to students, parents, and teachers;

  • Participates in orientation activities for new students and staff

    Qualifications:  BA/BS Degree, Masters Degree in counseling preferred

  • Experience and demonstrated ability in working with children in a teaching, counseling or other applicable capacity;

  • Knowledge of counseling strategies to promote esteem, shared character traits, and motivation

  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as a team member.
